Nexus One 80,000 Units: No iPhone Beater in Smartphone Wars

Monday, February 8, 2010

Google’s Nexus One Smartphone is so far no iPhone killer in the ongoing smartphone wars, new data suggests.

Analysis from mobile cell phone specialists show the much hyped Google smartphone Andropid the Nexus One gained sales of around 80,000 units in its first month of sale. This compares to iPhone 600,000 unit sales for its debut back in 2007.

The lower sales figures compared to the Apple iPhone smartphone indicate Google had a very long way to go if it wants to compete with it’s Californian competitors.

Googles expectations are high, however, its late entry into the surging smartphone market definitely presents the technology behemoth some challenges in terms of market share and future sales growth.

Analysts suggest the lower sales figures compared the the Apple iPhone in its infancy has a lot to do with Google avoiding a traditional sales model, selling the Google phone directly on its web site.

The smartphone sales analysis from Flurry also indicated that the new Motorola Droid, which, l is built with Google’s Android mobile software similar to the Nexus One sold a massive 525,000 units in its first month.

Popularity of the Nexus One from Google may also be hampered by the decision from Googles bosses in Mountainview to spend virtually no money on marketing the new Nexus One smartphone.

Google chiefs defended the marketing technique:

“What the Nexus One is really about is a new way of buying a phone,” said Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt recently.

“The Nexus One is simply the first of a series of examples where you can essentially purchase a phone online from one or multiple manufacturers and have it just work. We think that’s a natural evolution of a particular model.”

Googles Nexus One smartphone sells for $US529 without a wireless carrier service. Potential customers to the Nexus One Google phone can choose to buy the smartphone for $US179 and commit to a two-year contract with T-Mobile USA.
