Migraine food remedies

A first migraine attack usually occurs in the late teens and twenties. There are a few known food triggers for migraines, which make arteries in the brain tighten, then expand. Serotonin levels in the brain are low between attacks but very high during the headaches. The common symptom is a continuous throbbing in one side of the head, and can de extremely disabling. Some people get ‘auras’, or strange sensations that warn the migraine is on its way. These include, flashing lights, zigzag lines, or a blind area in your field of vision. Once the migraine starts, lots of teens get nausea and vomit, some are sensitive to light and sound. Others have dizziness, tingling and numbness.

Cheeses, chocolate, beef, red wine, fried foods and citrus fruits are known triggers for migraines. These foods contain tyramine. Low blood sugar, brought on by improper dieting, or starvation, or too much refined sugars, also bring on migraines. Dehydration, such as from excess salt or alcohol intake and hormonal changes during PMS are known to cause migraines too.

Save yourself some pain with good long-term eating habits. You’ll have to rearrange your hectic schedule to fit in any nutrient shortages by eating a well-balanced diet, including foods rich in Vitamin B2, or riboflavin. These include whole grains, egg yolks, milk, spinach and lean fresh meat.

To avoid blood sugar swings, eat smaller, more frequent meals, and choose whole grains, or non-white carbos for a stable blood sugar throughout the day. You may also have to avoid some fruits, like bananas, oranges, plums, broad beans and tomatoes for their tyramine content. However, tyramine in fruits and vegetables are fine for most people. Experiment a little and keep a food diary; you’ll be able to identify the specific food triggers much easier!

Migraine headaches may also mean you have a food allergy. Common culprits include wheat, milk, cheese, tomatoes, oranges and potatoes. Some people develop migraines after drinking caffeinated beverages, like teas, coffee, colas, and sodas.
