How to Remove Acrylic Nails at Home
Having artificial nails put on is the easy part, but removing them at home can be disastrous! Find out how you can remove them safely by reading this article!
There are fake eyelashes to make your eyes look dramatic and sexy, and there are wigs to give your hair curls, length, or temporarily change the color, and there are artificial fingernails.

Acrylic nails, especially, are a useful beauty aid that can make short, rough, or bitten fingernails look long, slender and attractive. Because of that, it is estimated that women spend more than four billion dollars a year on artificial fingernails. Wearing acrylic nails can be beautiful, but removing this type of false nail can be dangerous. If acrylic nails are removed by certain common methods, your real fingernails can be damaged or they can even come off!
How to Remove Acrylic Nails
Home Removal Products
You should never pick acrylic nails off, nor should you use nail clippers to take them off piece by piece. Doing this will damage your real nails underneath for sure! Using an artificial nail remover at home is probably the most common method of removal. To use this product, you simply soak your acrylic nails in the nail remover until the acetone loosens the adhesive up. (It may take a half an hour to an hour to soak the acrylic nails loose, but your patience will pay off in the end when your real nails underneath are less damaged than other methods in the process.) Then, you should carefully peel the acrylic nails off, and finally finish the job by buffing your real nails until they are clean of any residue.
Growing Your Nails
If you have even more patience, there is another way to remove acrylic nails at home that is considered to be the healthiest method for your natural nails: simply grow them off. Just allow your real nails to grow, and to grow the acrylic nails off of your fingers in the process. Keep them filed down as they grow, and keep them painted with nail polish. How long the process will take will depend on how fast your real nails grow.
Ultrasonic Wave
On the other hand, if you are short on time and patience, you can try using an ultrasonic artificial nail remover. This is a modern method for safely removing all types of nails at home. This type of nail remover actually creates ultrasonic waves with an acetone solution that help to erode the adhesion on your acrylic nails. Not only that, but the waves massage your fingers too, and help aid in the circulation of the blood.
With an ultrasonic artificial nail remover, you can remove acrylic nails in about ten minute’s, tops. All you do is plug the unit in, pour in an acetone solution, turn the power on, adjust the power control, and then stick your fingers in the solution, sit back and relax. After several minutes, you will know when to remove your fingers when the ready light comes on.
Caution
One final caution about acrylic nails that you need to know: if you want to protect your real nails, as well as your health, don’t let any nail technician use a chemical called “Methyl Methacrylate”, (MMA), when they are applying your acrylic nails. This chemical was declared to be poisonous and injurious when it is used on fingernails by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clear back in the 1970s! It can cause irritation to the eyes, nose and throat, skin rashes, fungal infections, nail loss and deformation – it can even cause you to lose the feeling in your fingertips, weakness – abnormal liver and kidney functions, nervous system damage, and, if you are pregnant, it can hurt your fetus. Make sure that the salon you patronize uses a safer alternative called “Ethyl methacrylate”, (EMA). It is more expensive for the salons to carry, but what price do you put on your health?
