Beauty tips: Types of Makeup Foundations

Everyone wants flawless skin. The best way to achieve it is take good care of it each and everyday. Avoidance of the sun, use of sunscreen and keeping it clean are the best practices. When all else fails though, a good makeup base or foundation can help a great deal. There are many different types to choose from today such as liquid, cream, compact or stick. There are also tinted moisturizers for those who prefer not to wear foundation but still want to add a hint of color to their complexion. Tinted moisturizers are the perfect alternative to wearing foundation when a more casual or lightweight look is preferred. They usually provide sheer coverage while being lightly hydrating.

There are also a couple of different formulas to look for based on skin type like oil-free and moisturizing and most lines contain a huge assortment of colors to perfectly match the skin.

If you have a more oily skin, then an oil-free liquid or fluid formula would be the best one for you although there are now some compacts that are oil-free. As the product states they contain no oils and are usually water based. This being the case, this type of formula will not add to an already oily or troubled complexion making it more slick or prone to breakouts. In fact some contain acne fighting and oil controlling ingredients that actually help improve it.

If your skin type is more on the dry side a moisturizing formula would be required. This formula can be found in almost all types from fluid to compact and everything in between. These usually contain some sort of oil to allow the makeup to glide more easily over dry skin. If it didn’t contain the oil base the foundation would go on blotchy and appear uneven. This type too, usually will contain ingredients to improve the dryness of the skin and helping with its ability to remain hydrated.

There are also foundations that work with combination/normal skin that actually control oil in the T-zone, which is the forehead, nose and chin, while moisturizing the dryer areas on the cheeks and around the eyes.

When looking for the perfect color of foundation to match your skin it is usually best to try it on the side of the cheek if a mirror is available. If not use your wrist. If you have a bit of a tan use the topside of your wrist, if not, use the under side. This procedure will give you a fairly close match. Also, look for a more yellow-based line of makeup. The color just appears more natural and improves skin tone. Today makeup is returnable, so if you are unhappy with it once you get home you should have no problem returning it and if you say you are allergic a store must take it back.

With so many options out there today you should be able to find a makeup base for your skin type in the formula you prefer. Compacts and sticks are so much easier to transport if you need to take it with you. All you need is a soft sponge to apply them and they usually blend pretty quickly. Whatever you decide have fun doing it. Applying makeup can bring out the artistry in anyone and most makeup counters salespeople can help a great deal with the application process so go ahead and put you best face forward!
